After spending a couple days with Donna in Vancouver, I wanted to take the ferry from Vancouver to Swartz Bay (~35km north of Victoria on Vancouver Island), then cycle to Victoria to take the high speed, passenger-only clipper ferry to Seattle where I would spend the rest of the day to visit a bit. However, it's Seafair festival in Seattle and all hostels were booked solid.
Plan B was to take the early clipper ferry at 11h30 and be out of Seattle before dark. Donna and I got up early to take the 1st ferry to Vancouver Island. For the 1st time in 3wks, it was raining and cold. I did get to the Victoria ferry terminal ~11h15, but I had to check in Surly and luggage, and then go through customs, so I missed it by a few minutes. I could only get on the 17h30 ferry which meant I would be dropped in downtown Seattle, a place I've never been, late in the day with nowhere to sleep. I decided not to worry and try to enjoy my few hrs in Victoria, but I was cold and ended up in an Internet cafe, where I finally found a room ~7km south of the ferry terminal for $60. I did end up seeing a bit of Seattle.
The next day, I took the road towards Gig Habor (close to Tacoma) to see Suzan and Richard, whom I haven't seen in many years.
Getting out of Seattle by bike was a bit unpleasant. Cycling in Washington state feels very different from before. It's a lot more populated and the vegetation is luxuriant. Everything is very green here.
Tomorrow, I'll head towards Raymond, WA.
I've uploaded the last pictures for BC and started a new album for Washington / Oregon.
