11 octobre, 2010 - Las Magaritas, Oaxaca (104km)
No dormí ayer.

I got to San Cristobal de las Casas early this morning. After checking a few places, I decided to stay at the Posada Mexico, an HI hostel, where I met a young couple (Yaniv & Erika) also travelling the Americas but on motorcycles. I actually had quickly met Yaniv at the Burger King in Juchitán the previous day. He had talked to me when he saw my bicycle. Different types of mounts, but still we had lots to share and the connection got established really fast. Somehow, I had the feeling that we would have liked to swap our means of transporation. Erika only leaned to drive a motorcycle last summer. We spent time together visiting town and also made a big supper with lots of vegetables, salads, pasta, and my 1st wine bottles of the trip. A memorable meal, simply sublime.
15 octobre 2010 - San Cristobal
Today, I wanted to try something different. Erika, Yaniv and I went horse-back riding to an indigenous village called San Juan Chamula. The horse ride was a lot more exciting than all others I've been on in Canada. Here, the horse actually responded to commands, and the trail was very rugged, almost scrarry at times - lot of rock climbing, mud, trees, cars, etc. In this village, you normally don't  take pictures of indigenous and their churches, as they believe it will steal their souls or their gods. I nonetheless asked Fernando, our guide, if I could photograph a woman but he replied no.

When we got to the village, there was a big gathering at the plaza for a trial. Initially, we thought they were judging a case of thief. The men in their traditional costumes spoke in their own dialect and I couldn't understand though I was close enough to hear. A bit later, the men with sticks brought a woman in front of the crowd. Later on, we met someone who understood the dialect and who explained that they were deciding the faith of a women accused of witchcraft, and that death was a possible sentence. The scene and atmosphere were surreal. Unfortunately, we had to leave at 12h00 and were unable to stay for the verdict. Before leaving, I also went inside their Catholic church, which from the outside looked like the gazillion churches I've seen around here so far. But inside, it was an unbelievable scene. There were no benches, lots of smoke from different fires, and the floor covered with lots of coke bottles, tree branches, etc. It was an unbelievable scene. I wish I could have take a picture.
